Indigenous Adolescent and Family Counsellor (GITS) €“ Full Time

 

Location: Mt Druitt

 
We invite applications with experience in drug and alcohol counselling to provide counselling, case management and/or brokerage services for vulnerable Indigenous young people aged eighteen years or younger who are experienc ing harm as a result of their alcohol and other drug use. You will conduct full assessments, develop appropriate care plans, and provide individual, group and family counselling.
 
The Role:     
  • To provide counsellin g, case management support and/or brokerage services for vulnerable Indigenous young people aged eighteen years or younger who are misusing or at risk of misusing alcohol and/or other drugs.
  •  To be proactive in working alongside other services promoting referrals and providing support to those in need.
  • Particular attention will be paid to Aboriginal parents/carers who are the primary carers of young people (or children) with particular attention to single parents/carers.
  • To implement the service according to the DoCS GITS service specifications.
 
Responsibilities/Duties include:
  • Conduct a thorough assessment of each client and develop an individual case treatment plan and implement in collaboration with the client.
  • Provide individual counselling to the young people.
  • Provide family mediation/support where needed to improve relationships between the young person, their family and community.
  • Liaise effectively with referrers, other service providers and families with particular regard to the Department of Community Services along with Juvenile Justice.
  • Maintain client records, statistical records and data on service delivery reports and administrative documentation as required by the GITS service specifications, the SMART database and TNF assessment tools.
  •  Participate in staff meetings and other forums as required.
  • Be a resource for other team members in the areas of individual, family and cultural issues related to client group.
  •  Maintain own professional development in consultation with the Manager.
 
Essential Criteria:
 
  • Recognised tertiary qualifications, such as in Psychology, Counselling, Family Therapy or Social Work.
  • Experience and demonstrated ability to provide effective compassionate individual and family therapy for young people and their families.
  • Ability to both take initiative and direction including to increase clinical skills if needed through TNF training and supervision provided.
  • Ability to work effectively with minimal supervision.
  • Commitment to the Ted Noffs Foundation model of practice.
  • Commitment to good and ethical practice.
  • Experience conducting thorough assessments.
  • Good oral and written communication of clinical information and reports.
  • Maintain appropriate boundaries with clients, families and other workers. Work effectively as a team member.
 
Desirable Criteria:
  • Post graduate training in family therapy.
  • Experience in applying a relapse prevention approach in working with young people with AOD problems.
  • Demonstrated ability and experience in working with young people with AOD problems.
  • Experience in conducting a full clinical assessment, developing appropriate treatment plans, delivering appropriate clinical interventions, and liaising closely with other professionals in your role of case management of young people.
  • Eligibility for membership of relevant professional association
